Alternative software - what does that mean?

Shareware, open source, free software and others - these are terms that different people tend to have different understanding. Therefore we have opted for the term 'alternative', in an attempt to distinguish them from their relatively expensive commercial counterparts.

The term open source software can have different meanings depending on the context in which it is used. The technical terminology for open source software refers to applications that have a publicly available source code and can be manipulated by any programmer.

The general public often uses the term shareware and open source software to refer to applications that are free or low-cost to download and run. The software presented our software inventory contains some open source software, but overall we chose these particular applications based on their economical feasibility and their applicability to environmental information management.
