Neretva Delta Activities Education Schools networking in the Neretva Delta A joint network of local teachers was established to improve education on environmental issues in schools in both countries and to implement new practices related to the specific environmental problems of their shared natural resources. A workshop was organised in Metkovic in December, 2003. Participants included kindergarten teachers, primary and secondary school teachers, representatives of the Ministries of Education from both countries, representatives of the University of Mostar, representatives of local communities and counties, students and journalists. A teachers manual was presented and disseminated to all participants. Environmental education programme An eco-path, with interactive elements for schoolchildren, was developed in Hutovo Blato Nature Park (Bosnia and Herzegovina). Interactive educational modules were also added to the ornithological collection in the City Culture Centre in Metkovic. School networking, 2005 In 2005 the Neretva Delta School Forum met in Metkovic on February 5, as part of a cross-border effort to link schools and NGOs from Neretva Delta. The meeting was attended by representatives of schools, ministries and NGOs from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. Participants presented various educational tools and projects, and explored models for consolidating their efforts and actions towards raising awareness of the natural treasures of the Neretva Delta. A children’s guide on the birds of the Neretva Delta was published, including stories, images, a map of the area and instructions for bird watching. The book teaches children about the importance of Neretva wetlands as a resting and feeding place for birds during the migratory and winter seasons. Eco-school newsletter Our Neretva The NGO Ljepa Nasa — with the involvement of its branches in Ploce, Croatia and Capljina, Bosnia and Herzegovina — developed the transboundary eco-school newsletter Our Neretva. Local teachers, scientists, students and representatives of NGOs from both countries are expected to contribute in preparing the first issue, which will be printed by the end of 2005. The newsletter is expected to serve as a tool for increasing awareness among local citizens on the natural and cultural values of the Neretva Delta. |
