Support for NGOs

   1. OBJECTIVE
The main objective of this subtask was to strengthen NGOs in relation to the accession requirements and benefits to the environment. This was attained by the following activities:

EU Accession Grants
The main objective was to support and encourage the activities of NGOs on EU accession issues through supplying targeted funds. Funds were available at the national level and supported those groups that had already been active on the accession issue to do more — especially with other stakeholders.
For more information, please see the EU Accession NGO Grants page.

Information Services
The main task was to develop information products and databases that would provide an invaluable source of information to environmental stakeholders in accession countries. The information was made more accessible to a wide range of users, and support was given through environmental and EU accession information in order to help stakeholders solve environmental problems and participate in environmental and EU accession-related issues.

The following databases were updated with REAP support :

DG ENV - NGO Dialogue
The objective was to strengthen NGO capacities in view of accession requirements and benefits to the environment, thereby enabling NGOs to play a long-term active role in improving capacities in implementing problematic EU directives. NGOs were also given a chance to actively cooperate with local authorities and central governments in the EU accession process and its potential impact on the country's environment. A series of seminars matched NGO interests with problematic directives.

Training for Young Environmental Leaders
The objectives were to develop the management capability and leadership skills of NGO members in managing a non-profit organisation and projects in the environmental field, and to assist NGOs in information dissemination and understanding of the EU accession process and its influence on candidate countries.
