  Capacity Building for Cleaning up Pollution Hot Spots of the Danube River Basin

Pilot Project Summary - Bosnia and Herzegovina

Lutkavac City, Bosnia:
Inclusion of citizens, NGOs, industry and relevant authorities in decision process related to water quality in Lukavac

NGO: Ecological Association of Citizens “Eko-zeleni” Lukavac,
Project Leader: Husejin Keran

Project Background

Mordrac Lake is an artificial reservoir of the Spreca and Turija Rivers. The lake is polluted directly by surrounding villages, industrial sites originating in nearby Lukavac City, and indirectly from the Spreca River. The effects of this pollution are unknown. The local municipalities and other relevant authorities do not have an adequate or accurate overview of what pollutants are present in the river, lake, and drinking water, or a clear picture of who has what information and what additional information should be produced.

Project Activities

In efforts to remedy this situation, the Ecological Association of Citizens will undertake three major activities:

1. Find out as much information as possible about the local water situation and public participation levels by:

  • Conducting interviews with relevant authorities;
  • distributing questionnaires to the public about access issues and interest in water-related information; and
  • organizing a roundtable, whereby relevant parties can discuss findings and brainstorm about solutions - including the possible benefits of determining water quality according to BiH law and training authorities on access requests.

2. Assuming that the relevant authorities provide their consent:

  • The water category of the Speca River will be determined;
  • workshops will inform parties of the results obtained, and discuss ways to make this information publicly accessible; and
  • any changes in access will be discussed in a second workshop.

3. The outcome of the project, including the river category analysis and any changes to access procedures will be:

  • communicated to the public through a brochure.
