UNDP/GEF Danube Regional Project Supports Access to Information and Public Participation in Environmental Decision Making
The project strengthens public access to information and participation concerning water pollution-related issues in the Danube Basin. At the national level, it helps to build the capacities of responsible government authorities in five Danube countries — Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Romania, and Serbia and Montenegro — to provide access to water-related environmental information to the public and facilitate public participation in decision making as required by the EU Water Framework Directive. It will also reinforce community involvement in solving water pollution-related issues at selected local “hot spots” in the Danube River Basin. At the international level, the project will strengthen the ICPDR’s ability to support stakeholder access to information and participation in water management. Project experience will be used to develop a package of practical participation tools that will be disseminated throughout the Danube Basin to assist authorities and various stakeholders in their efforts towards public information and participation. Although the project focuses primarily on capacity building for government officials, it also includes citizens, communities and NGOs through concrete pilot demonstration projects located at Danube River hot pots. Most recent publication (download 160-KByte PDF version) about the project is featured in Green Horizon Magazine.
