The overall goal of the grant programme is to encourage
and support NGO activities for sustainable development. This will
be done through competitive granting programmes at the regional and national
levels that will:
- assist financially the western Balkan NGOs in developing
their projects in support of sustainable development in the SEE region;
- promote intra-sectoral and cross-border cooperation
between NGOs and local and regional authorities addressing sustainable
development issues; and
- identify and support NGO projects which impact trans-boundary
or regional welfare in the western Balkans.
These grants will enable NGOs working at the regional
and national levels to:
- strengthen their positions/capacities, and define their
roles in effectively improving environmental quality at the local and
regional levels by promoting sustainable development issues such as:
sustainable life styles, a GMO-free environment, renewable energy, the
sustainable and equitable use of natural resources, organic agriculture,
good governance, and social equality;
- raise the population’s awareness
of sustainable development in order to encourage environmentally friendly
behaviour;
- collaborate with their governments in addressing sustainable
development priorities for their countries and address them through
a cooperative approach;
- cooperate with other stakeholders in implementing sustainable
development practices;
- cooperate with other NGOs in addressing cross-border
sustainable development issues, in particular those related to regional
development; and
- exchange best practices and know-how about regional
sustainable development initiatives and involve experts from the western
Balkans and the rest of Central and Eastern Europe.
The anticipated grants results are:
- improved consciousness of western Balkan NGOs and public
awareness of their role in sustainable development;
- strengthened capacity of NGOs to meet the challenges
of contributing to sustainable development in their countries and the
entire SEE Region;
- sustainable development priorities at the local and
regional levels set and NGO roles defined;
- western Balkan NGOs empowered to carry out projects
of their own design addressing priority development issues at the local
and regional levels;
- increased cooperation among NGOs and a stronger representation
of NGO interests and opinions towards decision makers;
- cooperation between NGOs from different countries of
the western Balkans on cross-border and region-wide sustainable development
issues; and
- the exchange of good practices among western Balkan
NGOs.
