The Step Towards Danube River Basin Preservation

Project Summary: The main activities of the project will focus on reducing the usage of chemical substances in agriculture which are polluting the Danube River directly or through underground water. With this project, for the first time on the national level, possibilities will be presented to protect the Danube basin. Principles of organic agriculture will be advocated, a significant factor for environmental protection. Direct effects of the project will be the reduction of nutrients and other toxic materials through media and public campaigns and educational activities for raising public awareness.

New Technologies in Danube Watershed Mines  USD 8,500

Project Summary: The project will campaign for the introduction of new methods and technologies in the Danube watershed mines that will result in a reduction of pollution by heavy metals and sustainable mine production in the Danube River Basin. The project will be realised through workshops for experts, a media campaign, public debates and initiatives for the introduction and implementation of new technologies, inquiries into citizens’ and experts’ familiarity with possibilities of new technologies, and monitoring of toxic material reduction when new technologies are implemented.

DEF Serbia and Montenegro Network towards EU Water Directive Implementation  USD 10,550

Project Summary: The aim of the project is to promote water ecosystems through raising public awareness of key elements of the EU Water Directive (WFD). The project will be realised through education of NGO representatives, local governments, and water management companies about basic principles of WFD, and forming a strategy for the NGO sector in Serbia and Montenegro on the process of WFD implementation with emphasis on its role in creating plans for the management of water basins (RBMP). As one of the goals of WFD is improving the chemical and biological status of groundwater and underground water, activities realised through this project will have an indirect influence on pollution reduction of the Danube watershed.

The Environmental Value of Moravica Watershed and Pollutants Identification  USD 8,000
NGO Name: Experts Network citizen association, Aleksinac
Project Leader: Vesna Milenovic                                     
Project Summary: Research conducted during the project will fit into the joint plan of environmental protection of the municipality of Aleksinac, a spatial plan for the Morava watershed, as well as the realisation of a local environmental action plan, which will improve the environmental status of the Danube watershed. The project will be realised through monitoring actions, a cadastre of polluters, a media campaign, public tribunes and youth education on the importance of preserving water resources, and education of agricultural producers on controlled and rational usage of mineral fertilisers and pesticides.

Protection of Danube Watershed from Nutrient Pollution  USD 10,500

Project Summary: The aim of the project is to educate and raise the awareness of managers of local enterprises and representatives of selected municipalities about Danube pollution by nutrients and toxic materials caused by industrial disposals. The project will likely result in greatly improved cooperation between local authorities, businesses, citizens and NGOs. The project could serve as a model for other industrial regions. It will be realised through inquiries, workshops and strong media campaigns.

Tara – Welfare and Obligation  USD 5,600
NGO Name: Society of River Tara Friends
Project Leader: Suzana Bulatovic                                    
Project Summary: Through an educational campaign, especially dialogues with local citizens, the goal of the project is to raise the level of public awareness on the need to reduce the use of chemical substances in agriculture. This goal will result directly in the reduction of nutrients in the Tara River.

Towards Pollution Reduction of Upper Stream  USD 6,850
NGO Name: Green Network of Vojvodina
Project Leader: Natasa Djereg                                    
Project Summary: The project consists of environmental education in Upper Stream (Vojvodina) about the point and non-point pollution of water habitats from agriculture and ways of its reduction with the aim of creating local possibilities for addressing the problems of nutrient reduction and filling the gaps of local authorities, NGOs and the wider public about problems of pollution and water management in general. The impact of the project is estimated to be more increased wetland areas, a cross-border and national project related to pollution reduction, improvement of the state of water habitats and vegetation, introduction and usage of organic methods of production and a reduction of pesticide usage.
