Czech Republic (Total: USD 40,000) Public Participation on Improving Water Quality in Horni Olsava Basin USD 6,689 NGO Name: CSOP Veronica, Brno Project Leader: Katrin Zwiebova   Project Summary: The project is focused on raising the awareness of the general public on surface water pollution from applying fertilisers in agriculture, changing consumer behaviour and supporting public involvement in decision-making processes in water management. The project concerns the promotion of phosphate-free detergents and best practices in waste management at the local (municipality) level. The project will be developed in cooperation with the regional authority of Zlinsky district. The main components (activities) of the project are: a seminar on water and waste management for municipality representatives, water management experts, environmentalists, etc.; information campaign on using washing powders; and participation of local schools in “home” ecology. Nutrient Reduction through Applying Biological Preparations USD 5,000 NGO Name: Nautilus sport diving club, Breclav Project Leader: Martin Spitt   Project Summary: The project will deal with the use of agricultural technologies reducing sources of pollution, underground and surface water, and the promotion of alternative methods eliminating nutrients and toxic substances. The main objective is to use and promote biotechnology to contribute to the reduction of nutrients in surface water and sediments. The biological balance in the water could be restored. The project involves the following steps: mapping natural water systems, ponds, river streams and wetlands, collecting information about the pollution found there; applying bio-preparations into selected water ponds; and conducting an information campaign and inviting public participation into the use of biotechnology and project outputs. Environmental Education in Morava Wold USD 7,968 NGO Name: VIS Bile Karpaty o.p.s. (Education and Information Centre of White Carpathian) Project Leader: Josef Dufek   Project Summary: The main aim of the project is to change attitudes of local residents and visitors to the Straznicke Pomoravi nature reserve. The project will raise public awareness on water pollution, threats and impacts of human activities at the local level. Future without Toxic 2004 in Danube Basin USD 6,760 NGO Name: Arnika Project Leader: Jindrich Petrlik   Project Summary: The project is focused on solving problems with the toxic dump near the village of Pozdatky. It will propose an acceptable solution to prevent toxic waste from leaking into the soil and the underground water system. Eco-farming Campaign in Morava River Basin USD 5,683 NGO Name: EPOS eco-farming advisors association Project Leader: Jiri Urban   Project Summary: The project focuses on promoting eco-farming approaches in agriculture in the Morava River basin. The project will observe the impacts of eco-farming on river water and its comparison with “conventional” farming methods. The outputs will be presented at the national level. Reducing Eutrophisation of Pisecny Pond in Nature Reserve USD 7,900 NGO Name: Sagittaria Project Leader: Michal Kratky   Project Summary: The project will encourage self-cleaning processes in a small pond. It will monitor the vegetation, phyto- and zooplankton, and the chemical conditions of the water. The results will be presented and promoted and information will be disseminated to the general public. The project will contribute to improving the conditions of water quality in Pisecny Pond and the outputs and result would be used in other areas of the Danube basin region.
