Sediment Remediation Feasibility Study, Poland

Date:
Year 1998/1999

Location:
Zelazowa Wola, Poland

Responsible organisations:
Voivode of Warsaw Province, Voivode of Skierniewice Province, Provincial Fund of Environmental Protection in Warsaw, Ministry of Environmental Protection, Natural Resources and Forestry.

Description:
Results of the study entitled "Masterplan for Restoration of the Utrata River" were used, and additional, more specific data were collected in order to characterize the remediation site. Criteria for potential applicable remediation techniques were listed and restoration alternatives were summarized. Finally, selection of proper technology was made.

Objectives:
To develop a sediment restoration strategy that will improve the water quality of the Utrata River in the vicinity of Chopin Memorial House at Zelazowa Wola.

Issues addressed:
Sediment remediation, recontamination and financing.

Results achieved:
Applicable technology for remediation has been identified. Sediment removal and disposal seemed to be the most viable option for the Zelazowa Wola area. It was recommended that mechanical dredging should be used. Different options have been identified for controlling contaminant release during dredging. Some pollution control measures have been proposed, in order to minimise recontamination of the restored area. A conceptual plan for restoration has been made.

Financing:
Japan Special Fund - technical assistance.
