Location:
Veles, former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia
Responsible organisations:
Municipality of Veles, MHK Zletovo and the Macedonian Ministry of Urban
Planning, Construction and Environment.
Description:
The City of Veles suffers from acute environmental problems which are
created both by uncontrolled industrial discharges of the MHK Zletovo zinc
and lead smelter and the fertilizer plant. As a result, serious
contamination of the River Vardar is evident.
Untreated wastewater, coming from the production process
at the smelter and fertilizer plant are the main factors contributing to the
degradation of environmental conditions in the City of Veles. The JSF
project aimed to provide technical solutions leading to mitigation of
pollution as related to the River Vardar.
Objectives:
To develop a feasibility study for MHK Zletovo Wastewater pollution
mitigation through introduction of cleaner technologies and treatment.
Issues addressed:
Cleaner technologies, industrial wastewater treatment, pollution sources
clean-up and financing.
Results achieved:
The feasibility study came up with technically feasible solutions, and
immediate implementation plans, for the most pressing wastewater problems
resulting from production activities of MHK Zletovo.
Lessons featured:
Good cooperation of all project parties produced tangible and effective
results.
Financing:
REC/Japan Special Fund - technical assistance.
Local financing - start-up of project implementation.
