Date:
Year 1998/1999
Location:
Catchment region of Sajo River, Hungary
Responsible organisations:
Ministry for Transport, Telecommunication and Water Management, Ministry for
Environment and Regional Policy, Ministry for Industry and Trade.
Description:
The Sajo Valley, a center for heavily polluting industries such as steel,
metallurgy, chemicals and petrochemicals, is considered one of the most
environmentally endangered areas of Hungary. Legal and illegal waste deposit
sites, with unknown content, have also caused severe problems. This project
addressed contamination in ground water, surface water, sediments and soil.
In addition, waste disposal sites were also investigated. The basis for a
cost-effective, overall, regional pollution abatement programme is to be
developed, in order to ensure an adequate supply of safe, potable water and
to solve the problems coming from unsatisfactory waste treatment.
Objectives:
To conduct an overall pollution survey and prepare an integrated pollution
map, which provides the basis for establishing environmental abatement
priorities in the area.
Issues addressed:
Potable water supply, heavy metal contamination, waste-water treatment and
waste-management.
Results achieved:
Contamination level of surface and groundwater has been determined. The
project identified and mapped more than 800 industrial and municipal waste
sites in the Sajo Valley using mainly (aerial) photographic information. A
large number of illegal waste sites still remained undetected. Based on
findings, the following items have priority in the region:
- protection of raw water quality used for the potable
water supply system;
- investigation and remediation of waste sites.
Financing:
Japan Special Fund - technical assistance.
