Masterplan on the Utrata River Restoration, Poland

Date:
Year 1998/1999

Location:
Utrata River, Poland

Responsible organisations:
Voivode of Warsaw Province, Voivode of Skierniewice Province, Provincial Fund of Environmental Protection in Warsaw and the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Natural Resources and Forestry.

Description:
An assessment of the environmental state of the Utrata River and the surroundings has been made. Based on site visits to sewage treatment plants and sampling of the stratum of the river, main discharge points of untreated sewage and industrial water have been investigated. Potential contaminant sources were to be identified.

Objectives:
To formulate a masteplan that will ensure the restoration of Utrata River water quality to Class 2 by the year 2010. This includes assessment of the quality and composition of Utrata River sediments and their potential to act as a contaminant source for the river in both the short and long term. The objective was to propose and study alternative masterplans, together with their advantages and disadvantages, to develop financing plans for implementation of the final masterplan and to identify investment opportunities amenable for pre-investment studies.

Issues addressed:
Water quality, wastewater treatment and restoration techniques.

Results achieved:
A technically and economically feasible masterplan has been formulated to restore the Utrata River's water quality. Cost and investment projections for the overall implementation of the masterplan, and identification of investment opportunities, are also included. Pilot projects have been proposed to test the technical, economic and environmental feasibility of restoration techniques.

Financing:
