| Activities
Agricultural production is a common source of
both point and non-point sources of pollution. ITF-funded projects in
Poland and Romania aim to kerb the use of fertilisers and reduce groundwater
pollution to ensure a sufficient supply of clean surface water and groundwater.
Stress is placed on:
- promotion of cleaner technologies and sustainable agricultural practices;
-
strengthening local research capabilities and extension services; and
- the sharing of best practices from Italy.
The project will work with local farmers and agricultural engineers in a selected pilot area, and with local and national decision makers to support this shift.
The primary activities are:
- development of a strategy for the introduction of more sustainable agricultural practices;
- study visits for 120-150 farmers and agricultural engineers to Italy to see sustainable agricultural technologies and practices in use;
- demonstration activities; and
- evaluation of the current state of agriculture in the area targeted, including the various forces at work.
