Outline

Sustainable agriculture is characterised by multi-sectoral production activities, crop production being directly related to animal production. Maintaining natural meadows and hay-lands in a natural status is of utmost importance, combining land utilisation in a sustainable way. Farming should not only take economic aspects into consideration, but also ecosystem protection and conservation, as well as social and cultural aspects.

The project aims to address diffuse/non-point pollution caused by the current agricultural activities by changing current practices and promoting new, less pollutant technologies and introducing sustainable agricultural practices

Objectives of the project include:

  • to provide the necessary information on sustainable agriculture practices to local farmers and agricultural engineers in order to promote sustainable agricultural practices that will improve the quality of the pilot area’s environment;
  • to improve water, soil and air quality by reducing the level of nitrates, fertilisers and pesticides through the use of new technologies and also reducing erosion on agricultural land in neighbouring areas;
  • to raise awareness at the local level on compliance EU requirements to limit the use of fertilisers and pesticides and to promote bio-products; and
  • to appraise the replicability of Italian best practices on sustainable development to be potentially transferred to target groups.
