| The
REC launched its new environmental curriculum for youngsters, the
Green Pack Junior, grabbing the attention
of scores of environmental ministers, UN officials and educators
at the recently concluded Environment for Europe Conference in Belgrade.
About 130 people attended the October 10 launch
to examine the new teacher’s resource targeting children in
grades 2-6. Green Pack Junior gives educators original and accessible
materials for teaching sustainable development issues in an engaging
and motivating way. The materials present the key issues facing
the world today — why the world is the way it is — and
allow pupils to think critically about these problems, as well as
to discuss what we might do about them.
Developed with funding from Toyota, Green Pack
Junior is the younger sibling of the REC’s popular Green Pack,
a package for young teens that has been translated and adapted for
10 countries, with another half dozen editions on the way. As compared
to its multi-media big brother, Green Pack Junior is designed to
be easily taught in classrooms with less technical equipment.
Green Pack Junior comprises a 140-page, amply illustrated
teacher’s handbook covering 10 environmental topics, from
atmosphere, water and soil to population and consumption. Fact sheets,
quizzes, games – even fairy tales – augment its lesson
plans.
The original, English-language prototype, focusing
on globally relevant lessons, is now being promoted for adaptation
to specific countries. Those interested in free-of-charge copies
need only to pay postage. Please contact the REC’s Kliment
Mindjov at kliment@rec.org.
