AIM: As part of an effort to promote eco-efficiency - in order to improve industry's competitiveness in the European market, increase its profitability, and reduce its environmental impacts by cost effective compliance - this meeting is designed to secure assurances from industry and Ministries of Economy and Environment of their full support for the Åarhus Business and Environ-ment Initiative (ABEI), including the necessary structures to manage the on-going campaign and organisation of the National Roundtable on Eco-Efficiency, which will be held in November 2000, in Budapest.

PRESENT: - EU Commissioner for the Environment, Margot Wallström
- Representatives of the Hungarian government
- Co-chairs of ABEI, Tom Garvey and Patrick Nodé-Langlois
- Top industrialists as leading speakers
- CEOs from local industries
- Local partner: KÖVET-INEM Hungária

FORMAT: The meeting will begin with a short speech by the Hungarian Parliamentary Secretary of State of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Béla Glattfelder and EU Commissioner Margot Wallström. Practical experience of closed or ongoing eco-efficiency, cleaner production and environmental management projects in Hungary will be presented to the Commissioner, followed by a dialogue between the Commissioner, Secretary of State and the industrialists. After the discussion, a "visual" presentation by the ABEI co-chair on the Åarhus Business and Environment Initiative will be given, followed by the concrete WBCSD approach to eco-efficiency. Presenters will outline the "Aims of the Meeting," and ask for advice, guidance and support from the government and industry representatives in furthering the eco-efficiency agenda in Hungary, in the context of accession to the EU and implementation of the EU requirements, in particular the IPPC.

The idea of organising a National Eco-efficiency Roundtable in November will be outlined. Examples from Germany will highlight how saving potential can be achieved with environmental improvement. This will be followed by a presentation of feasibility opportunities from leading Hungarian and EU CEOs. The last event of the day is a discussion forum, in which participants will consider further possible activities and investigate the demands of local industry. Representatives will be invited to participate in a subsequent press conference.
