Projects: Legal and penal mechanisms for strengthening the protection of environment. The project is a reaction to recent increases in anti-environmental crime. REC tries to enhance cooperation and create a common framework between all institutions responsible for the execution of environmental law. This will be achieved though a series of workshops and training for judges and prosecutors, dealing with three main areas: crimes against wildlife species, problems arising from execution of criminal law in trans-boundary waste traffic and issues of legal operations in relation to new developments which could have a negative impact on the environment. The project includes three workshops for prosecutors and judges from all over the country. Education for Natura 2000. REC recognizes that awareness and cooperation of the citizens and local authorities is crucial for effective environmental protection. What follows, education and raising awareness are crucial for conservation activity in Natura 2000 areas. With this in mind REC is preparing a pilot program in two model sites: Malopolski Vistula Gorge and Lower Bug Valley. The program is aimed at local teachers, in order to try and broaden their ecological knowledge and increase their capacity, as well as provide them with educational aides, and to encourage them to create local Friends of Nature clubs. In particular, REC will publish a handbook for teachers, which will help them to create and run classes on Natura 2000 areas. There are also workshops and seminars organized for teachers, dealing with Natura 2000 program and local eco-education methodologies, as well as a field-course, where teachers learn practicalities of eco-education in the field. Together with other partners REC strives to create greater awareness
and commitment to sustainability among the municipalities of Europe, with
intention of improving the quality of environment and standards of living.
Its principal aim is to develop an internet-based Toolkit and a Training
Package to support and assist potential and current Aalborg Commitments
signatories across Europe in developing, implementing, and monitoring
policies to meet the Aalborg Commitments. It will also be aimed at encouraging
interested local authorities to sign up to the Commitments and to undertake
the process of implementation. Other Projects: EIA & IPPC training Mechanisms of Environmental Impact Assessment and Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control are the most important tools that the EU introduced to achieve sustainability and ensure that economic development will not be at the expense of the environment. Commissioned by the Ministry of Environment and Cooperation Fund, REC has prepared and carried out a series of workshops and seminars for governmental and local officials involved with EIA and IPPC. The training presented the theoretical and legal background of EIA and IPPC as well as procedures and practicalities involved with implementing them. Communication for Nature Conservation is based on observation and experience showing that areas of high natural value cannot be protected without involvement and understanding of local communities and other interested parties. The programme provides nature conservation administration (national and landscape park staff), as well as NGO leaders, with training in efficient communication helping fulfill environmental protection’s objectives. The activities included thus far are: a series of regional workshops, seminars for directors of national parks, publishing a handbook, and international experience exchange (Poland – Latvia – Lithuania).
