The Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe (REC) is an independent, not-for-profit, regional organization devoted to the improvement of the environment in Central and Eastern Europe. The REC was established in 1990 by the United States, Hungary and the Commission of the European Communities. The REC mission is to assist in solving the environmental problems in Central and Eastern Europe by encouraging cooperation among nongovernmental organizations, governments, businesses, and other environmental stakeholders, by supporting the free exchange of information and by promoting public participation in environmental decisionmaking. Beneficiary countries include Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, FYR Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and FR Yugoslavia. Donor countries: Austria, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, European Union, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland and United States. |
