A needs assessment of environmental journalism in South Eastern Europe

Scope and Technical Implementation of the Survey

Studying the region’s environmental journalism

The survey covers environmental journalists from the target countries of the REPC: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, FYR Macedonia, Romania, Yugoslavia and Kosovo (territory currently under UN interim administration). The questionnaire was distributed regionally through the media information service contact list of the REC. REC country offices also distributed the questionnaire to their environmental media contact lists. The survey was thus distributed to a large number of journalists — more than 200 — throughout SEE.

The questionnaire was also sent out electronically to journalists covering the environment in SEE countries. The REC distributed the survey through its existing media contacts database, as well as through the media contact lists of its country and field offices in SEE.

It was impossible to distribute the questionnaire to the journalists who deal with environmental issues. To achieve the goals of the needs assessment, the survey needed to cover a minimum of five to eight journalists per country or province, representing the three main types of mass media: print, radio and television. Internet journalism would be included where possible. The survey also attempted to include journalists from private, public and state-owned media in the region.

Regretfully, the institutional capacity of the research team was not sufficient to provide this desired number of answers. While in some countries the response of the media community was high and the number of answers was more than the expected numbers (Romania, FYR Macedonia), other countries submitted only a few responses. Despite this fact, the research team decided to proceed with the analyses based on the available data. The reason behind this decision was that even a limited number of answers from some countries are a useful resource for determining the scope of services for environmental journalists at a regional level.

The questionnaire was processed electronically. One-dimensional tables (i.e. frequency tables) were produced by this technique. The tables visualised the research results. Based on some tables, charts were produced to illustrate the results. The research findings are discussed in the analytical report provided below. This report reflects:

  • common problems for the countries of the region;
  • specific issues facing individual countries;
  • differences in media practices related to the training to be carried out by the REPC; and
  • assessment of the situation with sources of information in the region and the future prospects in this field.

All of these points are linked to the analysis of existing and desired forms of assistance to journalists to be offered by the REPC in the future.
